Brick Column Rebuild in Wilmington, North Carolina

This Wilmington brick column rebuild project involved a collapsed masonry column caused by structural instability and foundation failure. Cary Masonry carefully dismantled the damaged structure, installed a new reinforced footing, and rebuilt the brick column to restore strength, stability, and long-term durability.

What Caused the Brick Column to Collapse?

Brick columns often fail due to inadequate footing depth, water infiltration, soil movement, or improper reinforcement during original construction. In this case, the column had shifted over time until structural integrity was lost.

Addressing only the visible damage would not have solved the issue. The base support system required full reconstruction.

Careful Demolition and Site Preparation

The damaged column was carefully dismantled to preserve surrounding masonry and prevent additional structural stress. All unstable materials were removed, and the foundation area was excavated to prepare for a new reinforced footing.

Installing a Proper Reinforced Concrete Footing

A new reinforced concrete footing was installed to provide adequate support for the rebuilt column. Proper depth, leveling, and reinforcement are essential to prevent future settlement or movement.

Selecting and Matching Replacement Brick

One of the most important parts of rebuilding a brick column is selecting replacement brick that blends naturally with the existing structure. Matching brick involves more than color alone — size, texture, absorption rate, edge detail, and manufacturing style all affect how the finished repair appears.

For this Wilmington project, we worked with local suppliers to locate brick that closely matched the original material. Samples were compared on site in natural light to ensure tone and surface texture aligned with the surrounding masonry.

Careful material selection helps the rebuilt column integrate seamlessly with the property rather than standing out as a patch. Proper mortar color and joint finishing were also adjusted to complement the existing brickwork.

Proper Layout, Measuring, and Brick Bonding

Rebuilding a brick column begins with precise layout and measurement. Before setting the first brick, the column footprint is squared, aligned, and verified against surrounding structures to ensure proper positioning and consistent spacing.

Accurate measuring prevents tapering, leaning, or dimensional inconsistencies as the column rises. String lines and level checks are used throughout construction to maintain straight vertical alignment and uniform joint thickness.

Brick bonding pattern is equally important. Each course is staggered correctly to distribute weight and create structural interlock between units. Proper bonding strengthens the column, prevents vertical seam weakness, and improves long-term durability under load and environmental exposure.

Attention to layout, joint spacing, and bond pattern ensures the rebuilt column is not only visually balanced, but structurally sound from base to cap.

Brick Column Reconstruction and Reinforcement

Once the footing cured, the brick column was rebuilt using proper alignment, structural reinforcement, and compatible mortar materials to match the surrounding masonry.

The completed rebuild restored both structural stability and the visual continuity of the property.

Column Cap Installation and Moisture Protection

Proper column cap installation is essential to protect brick masonry from long-term moisture damage. Without adequate protection at the top, water can penetrate the column core, saturate mortar joints, and accelerate structural deterioration over time.

For this Wilmington brick column rebuild, the cap was carefully installed to ensure proper overhang and water shedding. The design allows rainwater to drip clear of the brick face rather than running down the sides, reducing staining and moisture intrusion.

In coastal environments, flashing and proper sealing details are especially important. Moisture protection at the cap prevents internal saturation, protects reinforcement, and extends the lifespan of the entire column system.

Attention to these finishing details ensures the rebuilt column performs structurally while maintaining a clean, durable appearance for years to come.
